Speaker Q&A: Jayney Goddard

“I want to inspire practitioners to take action, to really fully understand their uniqueness” – says Jayney Goddard, president of The Complementary Medical Association. She’ll be hosting both a Keynote and Business Clinic at camexpo (which opens this weekend!) – so visitors will have double the opportunity to catch this leading health and well-being expert in action!

Jayney Goddard MSc, FCMA, Lic.LCCH, Dip.ACH is a fellow of the Royal Society of Medicine. She is a popular and respected author, broadcaster and practitioner with an international clientele.

Who or what has been the biggest influence on your career?

The biggest influence on my career, my ‘driving force’ if you will, are the well-orchestrated, and heavily funded attacks on the complementary medical profession. I believe that these attacks are driven by representatives of ‘Big Pharma’ and ultimately the reason behind the attacks is profit. The complementary medicine and natural healthcare profession is growing exponentially year-on-year. This is genuinely eating into the profitability of the pharmaceutical industry. It is for this reason that I fight for the rights of practitioners, training schools and ethical companies within the profession, so that we all have the freedom to practice the work that we do so brilliantly and, ultimately, so that patients have the freedom to choose their own path to well-being.

What do you love most about your work?

I would have to say that is it is the people that I have the privilege of dealing with day in day out as president of The Complementary Medical Association. This includes all of the staff at The CMA and, of course, our many thousands of practitioners, hundreds of training schools and CMA Approved Suppliers that are registered with us.

What’s your most memorable work moment?

Well, it really meant a lot to me to be awarded the ‘camexpo’ outstanding contribution to complementary medicine award. It was lovely to be recognised as having contributed to this profession.

What are the key points you be covering in your keynote at this year’s camexpo?

The title of my Keynote session is ‘Kindness and compassion – the sane route to weight loss and well-being’. I’m going to be sharing the keys to helping clients lose weight, gently and permanently, by taking a mindful route to complete well-being. Kindness and compassion are the missing links that facilitate permanent healthy weight stabilisation – and following this talk, practitioners will be more equipped to support their clients in achieving their health goals.

The strategies (mind/body medicine, psycho-neuro physiology/biology/immunology) that I will be sharing can be implemented immediately, and will dramatically and positively impact both practice and patient success and satisfaction.

Techniques will include a fusion of ancient Zen teachings, cutting-edge biology and physiology, and also the latest findings in mind/body medicine, which were developed at Harvard Medical School – where I had the privilege of training under Dr Herbert Benson, ‘the father of mind/body medicine’.

What tips and advice would you give someone who’s just starting their career in healthcare and complementary medicine?

My three top tips are:
1) Really understand your USP – that’s your Unique Selling Proposition! This is the factor that differentiates you and your practice from everybody else out there. This is what I’m going to be talking about in my Business Clinic session at camexpo – so don’t miss it!
2) You need to find speaking opportunities for yourself whenever and wherever you can get them. My MSc dissertation looked at what makes practitioners successful and one of the most important factors was communication. If you can get out and communicate what it is that you do and more importantly ‘how what you do really helps people’ this is what will kickstart your career.
3) Take advantage of the might of social media. It is absolutely essential that you begin to build a database of people who would like to know about your work. That’s not to say that each and every one of them will become your client or patient, however the chances are that they may well know people who will benefit from the work that you do. I will be talking more about this at camexpo.

What is the one thing you want camexpo visitors to take away from your business clinic session?

I really want camexpo visitors who come to my Business Clinic session to go away fully understanding how to differentiate themselves from their ‘competitors’. Now, I’m not just talking about other complementary medical practitioners but I’m also thinking about other factors, which can affect people’s desire to use complementary medicine (GP practices, dentists etc).

I want to inspire practitioners to take action, to really fully understand their uniqueness. I will be giving lots of takeaway tips and techniques that can be implemented immediately to make a huge difference to any practice right away. All practitioners need to do is come along with an open mind and a willingness to learn and I’m more than happy to share the experience that I have gained from helping tens of thousands of practitioners in my role as president of The CMA over the last 22 years.

Why would you recommend practitioners/therapists visit camexpo?

camexpo is the most important trade show for everyone working in complementary medicine. It truly is not to be missed – especially if you are interested in improving your practice, building your business, promoting your school or even promoting your product line. There is no other show that can do this for you.

Jayney Goddard will be discussing Kindness and Compassion – the sane route to weight loss and well-being at 1pm on Sunday 27 September in camexpo’s Keynote Theatre.

Her Business Clinic session: Learn the secrets to differentiating yourself from your competitors so that you can build a vibrant, thriving practice now! starts at 12pm on Saturday 26 October.
