Find out more about marketing teacher and business mentor Lisa Barber, who supports natural health professionals to grow their businesses…

Who or what has been the biggest influence on your career?

I’m an only child and I’ve lost both parents. Bereavement coincided with a 13-month age gap between babies. Therapists and practitioners got me back up on my feet, and I came to appreciate how immensely valuable their work is. It broke my heart to see so many of them struggling to attract sufficient clients because they had an aversion to marketing. That’s why I launched Roots and Wings. I wanted to channel all my marketing and business experience into helping the helpers to help more people.

What do you love most about your work?

The passion and purpose my clients bring to the table is usually born out of their own struggles and hard-won wisdom. I love that I get to support people with a purpose beyond just profit so they can go on to help more of their own clients.

What’s the single biggest challenge for small businesses/sole practitioners trying to build a brand presence online?

Getting the attention of potential clients without resorting to tactics that feel salesy, unnatural, pushy or manipulative.

What are your three top tips for practitioners self-promoting their business for the first time?

  1. Ask yourself what problems your business solves then talk about those problems in your marketing. It helps people feel understood and they will be far more likely to feel safe with you and move forward.
  2. Have a niche. Nothing gets attention better than good old-fashioned relevance. If your headline speaks directly to someone’s life, they will want to read the rest. If they can see, right away that you specialize in people just like them . . . you will have their attention.
  3. The role of marketing isn’t to get people to say ‘yes’. It’s to help people establish if what you offer is a fit for their needs. Be honest and open about who you are, how you see things, the problems you help people with. Then allow people to make the choices they make. If people decide that you aren’t fit for them, this is a good thing.

What are the key points you’ll be covering in your session at this year’s camexpo?

I’m running a Business Clinic and also a Workshop this year. I’ll be demystifying marketing for those allergic to self-promotion. And I’m looking forward to teaching people how to attract more perfect-fit clients in simple, low-cost ways that actually work.

In addition to your session, why would you recommend practitioners/therapists visit camexpo 2016?
