Speaker Q&A: Professor Ben L. Pfeifer
Meet Professor Ben L. Pfeifer, M.D., Ph.D., a popular speaker at camexpo and director of Research at Aeskulap-International of Switzerland. Well known for his pioneering work in integrative oncology and cancer immunology, he believes there needs to be “better integration of holistic treatment approaches by mainstream oncologists”.
After his medical studies and specialty training at Humboldt-University Berlin, and University of Kentucky, USA, Professor Pfeifer held senior positions at various European- and US universities as well as private hospitals. He published extensively, including the standard textbook for integrative oncology, and he was honoured with the prestigious Humboldt-Prize.
Who or what has been the biggest influence on your career?
Professor Samuel Epstein and Aeskulap-Klinik, Switzerland.
What’s your most memorable work moment?
It is not only one moment! Every day, when our treatment protocol for metastatic prostate cancer can help men in need – these are the most memorable work moments for me.
What’s the single biggest challenge in your work?
To select the most effective treatment for an individual patient.
What’s one emerging trend or research that anyone working in your field should know?
‘Liquid biopsy’ may replace traditional methods of tissue sampling and change our approach to tumour diagnostics.
Do you expect complementary therapies to play a larger role in primary care in the years to come?
Yes, I do. Oncological patients, and patients in general, have become much more critical regarding toxic conventional treatments. They educate themselves about their disease, and they play an active role in their therapy choices, including complementary treatments.
What tips and advice would you give someone who is just starting their career in health care/complementary medicine?
Form a strong alliance with your patient and treat him or her, as you would expect to be treated.
What are the key points you’ll be covering in your Keynote at this year’s camexpo?
Key points of my presentation will be: Integrative oncological treatments for patients with metastatic prostate cancer – what works and what does not.
In addition to your Keynote, why would you recommend practitioners/therapists visit camexpo?
camexpo offers an excellent opportunity for holistic health care practitioners to meet like-minded colleagues, see new health care products, and get the latest news on effective and non-toxic complementary treatments.
Professor Pfeifer will be discussing Integrative oncological treatments for patients with metastatic prostate cancer at 11am on Saturday 26 September in camexpo’s Keynote Theatre.
