CThA Press Release: Are you working within the law?

If you are performing treatments within all the London Boroughs and some other parts of the country you are required by law to have a Special Treatment Licence, under the provisions of Schedule II of the London Local Authorities Act 1991.

There are a number of treatments that are classified as special treatments such as massage, aromatherapy, Bowen therapy, shiatsu, manual lymphatic drainage and reflexology to name but a few. You will need to have a licence to perform these treatments in all London Boroughs and in increasing numbers of council run areas across the UK.

It is an offence for any person to administer or advertise the availability of a special treatment without a licence unless there is an exemption in force. If you are currently providing treatments without a licence you are breaking the law. Any person found guilty of an offence may be liable on summary conviction to a fine of up to £2,500.

Special Treatment Licences can run into hundreds, and in some cases, thousands of pounds especially if you are working across several London boroughs, unless you are a CThA member that is! CThA members are exempt from paying for the Special Treatment Licence in recognition of the exceptionally high professional standards and quality of their membership body. This exemption could save you £1,209 per year if you work in Westminster, £844 if your work in Kensington & Chelsea, £440 in Lambeth and £341 in Islington. When you consider that annual CThA membership costs a mere £60 and comes with a whole host of further benefits like discounted insurance, there has never been a better time to join.
