100% Organic Skincare Products to Give Your Practice the Competitive Edge by Glenda Taylor
When Annalisa of Inspire Massage Workshops asked Glenda, founder of Balm Balm to collaborate with her on two exciting new courses, Glenda didn’t think twice about it as passing on her more than 20 years experience in the aromatherapy, fragrance and skincare industry has always been her passion. Both Glenda and Annalisa had been amazed at the amount of therapists using pre blended Aromatherapy oils and balms in treatments without product training, despite many insurers (including the policy offered by the CThA) NOT covering their use! It was time to do something about it! Anyone who has visited either of their stands at CAM will know that they are both brimming with enthusiasm and knowledge about their respective areas of expertise. Glenda was particularly ready for The Certificate in Organic Blends Product Knowledge as she had only just come back from a weekend at a well known spa where she had an interesting experience.
“I don’t like advertising the fact that I am a therapist when I go for a treatment as I never want the therapist to feel in any way judged and I really just want to lay back and enjoy it. I had chosen an aromatherapy treatment as that is my passion and I know how effective specific aromatherapy blends can be. On entering the room, there was a lovely array of a well known brand of aromatherapy blends so I was happy and expectant about my treatment. I was asked the standard contra indication questions and then which blend I would like to have for my treatment. “I just want a nice relaxing treatment was my reply” – there were a few blends that would have covered this request. “Well, any of these blends”, said the therapist, randomly waving her hand around! “What’s in this one?” I asked, trying to encourage her a bit. “Relaxing oils” she replied! I could have quite honestly cried at this point as I had looked forward to this treatment so much. I had expected her to be an aromatherapist being at such a smart venue but I would have been very happy – ecstatic even – to have had a good massage therapist with a real understanding of what she was going to offer and use on her client. She didn’t even ask me if I would like to smell them, nor did she pay any attention to the fact that some may not have agreed with me at all. I wanted to train her there and then on the spot even though they were not my products. My wish must have been a strong one as when Annalisa asked me to provide product and training for this course I knew exactly what needed to be done. Pulling together everything for these courses has been a huge amount of work but I feel that they will really be a contribution to our industry.”
The 100% Organic Facial Certificate is also very close to Glenda’s heart. “Beauty has become such a complex affair and while there are some amazing products out there with wonderful training programs bolted onto them, Annalisa & I could see that no one was really addressing simple yet effective 100% organic facials given by really experienced massage therapists.” Glenda feels that too many complex products used on the face can often confuse the skin and cause problems that could be addressed by a more gentle approach. Coming from an Italian background with a mother who had beautiful skin all her life with minimal product intervention, Glenda has always been an advocate of using only natural oils on her own skin and she really does practice what she preaches. She created her beautifully simple 100% organic facial products about a year ago and collaborating with Annalisa to use them in a professional treatment is the perfect way to use them. “Combining 100% organic ingredients with a really effective treatment and sound home use advise will give a unique experience in facials and one that massage therapists can easily and inexpensively bolt onto their treatment menu.” The real beauty of this treatment though is that it can be adapted to absolutely every skin type – even very sensitive skins. It is the perfect treatment to offer as a first facial for very young teenagers, those with or without skin problems and this in itself is a brilliant niche for therapists to pursue to give them the competitive edge.

Multivitamins Benefit Mother and Baby

Multivitamins benefit mother and baby
Low birth weight babies are at higher risk of illnesses such as diabetes, obesity and heart disease throughout childhood and in adult life. Inadequate intake of vitamins and minerals has been associated with low birth weight and a simple multivitamin may help.
Malnutrition and low birth weight babies are not only a major issue in developing countries, socially and economically disadvantaged people in industrialised countries are frequently affected as well.
In Hackney, East London a research project funded by the Mother and Child Foundation set out to see if providing a multivitamin and mineral supplement to mothers made a difference to nutritional status and pregnancy outcomes.
Before commencing the study it was found that 13% of mothers to be had iron deficiency anaemia, 72% were vitamin D deficient, 12% had vitamin B1 deficiency and 5% were deficient in folate. From the first trimester the women were given placebo or a multivitamin.
Unfortunately only 39% of women completed the study, which as the investigators point out “reflects a lack of interest in health and poor knowledge of the relationship between nutrition and pregnancy outcome.”
However those who took the multivitamins had improved nutritional status for measures of iron, folate, vitamin B1 and vitamin D. There was also a trend towards fewer low birth weight babies in women taking multivitamins (eight vs. thirteen in the placebo group) which corroborates with previous research.
“Multiple-micronutrient supplements from early pregnancy may be beneficial and larger studies are required to assess impact on birth outcomes and infant development” wrote the study investigators. The potential for something as simple as a daily multivitamin and mineral to improve health outcomes for future generations could be enormous.
