It is with great sadness that we announce that former CNHC Chair John Lant died on Monday 1 February following a period of illness. John chaired CNHC’s Board for two years following more than five years as a Board member. John was known by many in the sector following his valued contribution to the work that led to the creation of CNHC. John attended camexpo on a number of occasions and enjoyed meeting practitioners at the CNHC stand.
Our heartfelt condolences go to John’s family.

- CNHC response to NICE proposal to remove complementary therapies from supportive and palliative care guidelines
As many readers will be aware CNHC, and many other organisations involved with camexpo and across the sector, responded to NICE’s consultation on its proposed update to ‘Improving Supportive and Palliative Care in adults’.
NICE’s draft update proposes removing complementary therapies from the guideline despite its wide use in this area. This is particularly surprising given that the draft scope moves away from the requirement for research evidence and instead focuses on patient-reported outcomes, as well as patient and staff satisfaction with services – which can easily be provided.
CNHC alerted people across the complementary health and supportive and palliative care sectors on 6 January 2016 so that as many organisations as possible could respond to the consultation. We also worked collaboratively to present a robust case for retaining complementary therapies within the guidelines.
NICE has not yet advised when it will be publishing the consultation responses but has confirmed it received a high volume on this occasion. NICE will be reviewing the responses and will publish a final scope before developing the guideline itself over the next two years.
You can see CNHC’s response in full here: CNHC response to NICE guideline update. You can see the draft scope here: Supportive and palliative care: service delivery
We will provide updates as they become available.
